Eschatocol / Datum (Dating Clause)

Gr. eschatokollion ('last sheet glued') / Lat. datum ('given, enacted')

The concluding diplomatic section specifying the chronological coordinates of the enactment, including the Year of the Incarnation (*Annus Domini*), the imperial or papal Indiction, the regnal year, month, and day.

Early English diplomas were among the earliest legal instruments in Western Europe to use the Dionysian *Annus Domini* dating system, popularised by the Venerable Bede.

“Actum est autem anno ab incarnatione saluatoris nostri Iesu Christi sexcentesimo octauo decimo, indictione .iiii.”
