Sanctio / Anathema (Sanction & Curse)
Lat. sanctio ('penal clause') / Gr. anathema ('set apart for divine vengeance')
A fierce spiritual malediction threatening any future king, prince, or judge who dares violate, diminish, or annul the charter with excommunication, damnation, and eternal torment alongside Judas, Dathan, and Abiram.
The sanction formed the primary enforcement mechanism of early medieval diplomas before modern state coercive apparatus, terrifying usurpers with judgment on the Last Day.
Subscriptio & Signum Crucis (Attestation & Cross)
Lat. subscriptio ('writing beneath') / signum crucis ('sign of the Holy Cross')
The formal subscription and witness roster headed by the king, queen, archbishops, bishops, ealdormen (*duces*), and royal thegns (*ministri*), each accompanied by an autographed cross (+).
In Anglo-Saxon practice, subscriptions represented actual consent given at the witenagemot, with the sign of the cross serving as an inviolable sacred oath rather than an attached wax seal.
